A.R. “Tony” and Maria J. Sanchez Family Foundation

Every year, thousands of low-income families have access to a dedicated pediatrician and the medical care they need thanks to the A.R. “Tony” and Maria J. Sanchez Family Foundation Center. The demand for services grows stronger as patients refer their neighbors and friends and word continues to spread about the ways the Sanchez Family Center enables others to help themselves. Thank you for your kindness and compassion.

What inspires you to work at the Sanchez Family Center?
I am inspired to work here because of the type of population that we serve. It is an honor to help those parents who have worked so hard and continue to work hard so that their children grow up to healthy and productive individuals.
What led you to your profession?
The sciences have always been of interest to me, but it wasn’t until I was an undergrad at the University of Texas at Austin that I realized my passion was medicine. I volunteered at a local community clinic for pregnant women who were uninsured and experienced firsthand the joy and sense of fulfillment while helping patients at this clinic – the rest is history.
What’s your most memorable patient encounter?
One time I randomly asked a mother about reading books to her daughter, and she stated that she could not read. I remember talking to her about the resources that were available to her, if she was interested in learning, and how important reading was not only for her, but for her daughter’s future as well. Some months later she came to the office beaming because she had taken some of the classes and began to demonstrate her new skill of reading. To this day, we reminisce about that moment.

What inspires you to work at the Sanchez Family Center?
I’ve been a part of the Texas Children’s family for a total of 12 years. Prior to working at Sanchez Family Center, I worked at Texas Children’s Pediatrics Cypresswood. While working there, I had the opportunity to adopt several families from Sanchez Family Center. We were also able to personally deliver the holiday gifts to the families. At that moment, I knew I wanted to be a part of this practice. I remember telling my co-worker, “One day I will manage this practice,” and here I am now. I love that the physicians are so passionate about providing care to children. I truly enjoy serving the community and have a passion for helping others. The Sanchez Family Center represents everything that I value and that truly inspires me.
What led you to your profession?
Seeing qualities in people that others may not see.
